Inside Light on Lake: Meet the Artists

Artwork from selected artists Boo McCaleb, Erica Warren, and Rachel Quast

About the Project:

This summer, The Great Northern invited Minnesota-based artists to submit proposals for “Light on Lake,” a four-night public art experience that will transform East Lake Street into a large-scale moving projection installation. Selected artists will create digital projection artwork that will illuminate the walls and facades of East Lake Street businesses, turning them into animated canvases for local artists to share their work with the community.

In addition to creating original work, our selected artists will be leading free community workshops this fall, inviting neighbors and community members to share stories and ideas, and make some artwork of their own. More details on these upcoming workshops will be shared with our audience soon.

Meet the Artists

We’re excited to announce the three selected artists who will be bringing their work to Lake Street next year.

Erica Warren

(she/her)

a Black and CHamru (Chamorro) graphic artist, illustrator and puppeteer. Erica has participated in Monkeybear Harmalodic Workshop (2022), New Puppet Works (2023) and Minneapolis Puppet Lab (2024). Her puppet works have been shown in Minneapolis Crankiefest (2022-2024), Full Moon Puppet Show (2022), the Weisman Art Museum (2024). Erica explores the art of storytelling through shadow, rod and tabletop puppetry.

Boo McCaleb

also known as Booscapes, is a Minneapolis-based projection artist and creative technologist whose work bridges visual storytelling, community healing, and immersive design. Through their practice, Booscapes transform public spaces with light, color, and soundscapes, reflecting cultural experiences. Their installations center interactivity, the environment, and the collective imagination. With a background in facilitation, public art, and artist advocacy, Boo uses projection as both a tool and source of magic as a pathway toward joy, spirituality, and connection.

Rachel Quast

(she/her)

is a Minneapolis based interdisciplinary artist currently focused on design, illustration, and experimental animation. Her work can be found in national publications, television commercials, tour merchandise, apparel and more. She’s drawn to themes of collective memory, temporality, and the natural world.
