Virtual Talk: Winter Hiking 101
Sat, Feb 5, 11 am

Ambreen Tariq, founder of @BrownPeopleCamping, will use storytelling—and a reading from her first children’s book Fatima’s Great Outdoors—to share how her life experiences as a Muslim South-Asian American immigrant woman have shaped her love for the outdoors. During this conversational event, Ambreen will introduce the basics of winter hiking so that more people can benefit from being outdoors during Minnesota’s (long!) signature season. From dressing in layers, to weather-worthy footwear, and finding a nearby trail that suits you and your family, Ambreen’s storytelling style will encourage your adventurous spirit.

In-Person Walk: Explore North Mississippi Regional Park
Sat, Feb 5, 2 pm

With nearly 70 acres of varied landscape, North Mississippi Regional Park is one of the most amazing ways to connect with nature—right in our back yards. This family-friendly easy-going walk will explore some of the park's groomed trails, offering opportunities to glimpse the Mississippi River and spot birds and other wildlife, while you put your new-found (or hard-earned) winter hiking skills to the test.

Ambreen Tariq is an East Coast-based outdoorswoman with roots in Minnesota who’s dedicated to promoting greater diversity in our public lands through storytelling and the power of visual representation. She's the author of Fatima's Great Outdoors, her first children's book published by Penguin Random House. She's also the co-founder of Muslim Outdoor, a former board member and now volunteer advisor of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, and an Advisory Member of Sierra Club’s Outdoors For All Campaign. Her writing has been published in Outside magazine, and Ambreen has been profiled by the New York Times, NPR, SELF magazine, CNN Health, Elite Daily, and more.

About the Next Generation of Parks

The Minneapolis Parks Foundation’s Next Generation of Parks Event Series is the longest-running free public forum for talking about the ways our public spaces intersect with the important issues in our community today. For more than 10 years, we’ve hosted conversations about how design and planning for parks and greenspace affect racial equity, physical and mental health, community-building, climate, and culture.
