Philip Glass 85th birthday celebration at Malcolm Yards

Sun, Jan 30, 5:30 pm
Free, open to the public

On the eve of Philip Glass’ 85th birthday, The Great Northern honors the unprecedented impact the composer has had on the musical and intellectual life of his times with a gigantic outdoor screening of his cult classic KOYAANISQATSI projected onto Minneapolis’ iconic United Crushers Mill. Created between 1975 and 1982 by Glass and first-time director Godfrey Reggio, KOYAANISQATSI is an apocalyptic vision of the collision of two different worlds—urban life and technology versus the environment. Glass’ favorite pizza (potato) provided by Wrecktangle Pizza, specialty cocktails, and vegan cake will be served in the composer’s honor.

The featured cocktail, crafted by Nicholas Kosevich, is inspired by one of Glass’ most iconic operas Einstein on the Beach: Cognac, Celery Punch, Pineapple, Coconut Essence

Please note: Elements of this event will be held both in (food and drinks) and outside (KOYAANISQATSI screening) of the private Blueprint room at Malcolm Yards Market. Attendees are welcome to bring their refreshment outdoors.

Due to newly released Minneapolis and Saint Paul regulations we will be requiring proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or a negative COVID-19 test taken under medical supervision within 72 hours of the event. Masks are required in the indoor areas and recommended outdoors while not eating or drinking.

“The quintessential environmental movie – a transformative meditation on the current imbalance between humans and the wider world that supports them.” —The Guardian
