Founded in 2007 by choreographer Deneane Richburg, Brownbody’s mission is to liberate Black artistry through dance, theater, and figure skating. Brownbody’s work celebrates Black and African diasporic stories—bringing narratives long relegated to the margins into the spotlight and making the ice a more inclusive, welcoming space through engagement programs that foster intergenerational community. We transform both ice and stage into platforms for embodied storytelling, where movement becomes a vessel for nuanced, historically grounded expressions of Blackness. Our work engages the body as both archive and instrument, exploring themes such as the legacy of Saartjie Baartman, the era of Reconstruction, and the spiritual resonance of Ring Shout. By centering Blackness as a generative framework for somatic inquiry, cultural memory, and multi-sited artistic expression, Brownbody expands the boundaries of performance.
