The ever-sparkly ice displays are free and open to the public and are on display all 17 days of carnival in Rice Park during regular park hours. The beautiful masterpieces are created by area artists using an array of tools including knives, chainsaws, and other tools. See the artists at work (and competing for prizes and bragging rights). Warm up with some hot spiced mulled wine or another beverage to wet your whistle at the Ice Bar (hours coming soon!). The ice displays are illuminated at night and a beautiful time to be downtown Saint Paul to take in other wintry fun.

Join us for this cool winter walk through the streets of downtown Saint Paul! Come early and enjoy hot chocolate and cookies. The festivities start at 5:15 p.m. with the parade starting at 6 p.m.

The public is welcome to join festival organizers and ambassadors, along with neighbors, local business leaders, the Saint Paul Bouncing Team and dignitaries on this annual parade from the Securian 401 Building (401 Robert Street) to Rice Park. Walkers, most with luminaries in hand to light the way, will be greeted at Rice Park by live music and the Ice Bar.

Vulcan Snow Park Snow Sculptures

Visitors are encouraged to come out to Vulcan Snow Park to watch sculptors at work during the first two weekends. Finished sculptures are lit after dark and remain on display for the duration of Vulcan Snow Park—or until they collapse. (Sculptures are knocked down if they’re growing dangerously unstable, or may collapse on their own, so plan to visit them early!)

During this three-day competition, three-member teams from throughout Minnesota transform 8′ x 8′ x 8′ blocks of compacted snow into amazing works of art using only hand tools. If you are age 18 or older, you can join the fun! There are no experience requirements, and new teams are always welcome. Visitors are encouraged to come often to watch as the competition sculptures and giant exhibition sculpture take shape. Be sure to come on the final day to vote for your favorite sculpture in the People’s Choice Awards and congratulate the winners during the awards presentation.

The purpose of this competition is to challenge university and college students, as well as the general public, to design, build, and operate a fully autonomous snowplow to remove snow from a designated path. The objectives of this competition include encouraging students and individuals to utilize the state of the art in navigation and control technologies to rapidly, accurately, and safely clear a path of snow.

The magical journey of King Boreas along with Aurora, Queen of the Snows; the four Winds and Wind Princesses; as well as the Royal Guard begins with the Royal Coronation. This is a 130+ year old Winter Carnival Tradition. The Royal Coronation is celebrated with a formal meal plus a theatrical show that culminates with the crowning of the incoming Royal Family. Public viewing of the royal coronation is welcome at 7:45PM for $15 with a 2018 Saint Paul Winter Carnival Button.

Autonomous Snow Plow Competition

Rice Park (in front of the St. Paul Reference Library)

The purpose of this competition is to challenge university and college students, as well as the general public, to design, build, and operate a fully autonomous snowplow to remove snow from a designated path. The objectives of this competition include encouraging students and individuals to utilize the state of the art in navigation and control technologies to rapidly, accurately, and safely clear a path of snow.

Visitors are encouraged to come out to Vulcan Snow Park to watch sculptors at work during the first two weekends. Finished sculptures are lit after dark and remain on display for the duration of Vulcan Snow Park—or until they collapse. (Sculptures are knocked down if they’re growing dangerously unstable, or may collapse on their own, so plan to visit them early!)

Saint Paul Chef Experience

St. Paul Farmer's Market, Lowertown

Saint Paul and Minneapolis chefs Adam Eaton (Saint Dinette) and Thomas Boemer (Corner Table and Revival) will join forces again to delight guests with an outdoor feast in the St. Paul Farmers Market in Lowertown. New this year, James Beard Award-winning chef Tim McKee and Shane Oporto of OCTO Fishbar will join the outdoor celebration featuring sweet and savory soul-warming dishes from the fire kitchen, outdoor games, ice sculptures with MN Pure & Clear, music from The Current DJ Jade, and featured beers in partnership with The Growler.


In addition, McKee will be hosting a reception for VIP ticket holders in the lower level of The Market House Collaborative. The reception will begin an hour before the main event and include a hosted raw bar, cocktails, and wine. The space will also serve as a private warming house for VIP guests throughout the festivities.

We’re partnering with our friends at Mucci’s Italian and 612 Sauna Society to provide an authentic Bold North night under the winter moon. Guests will gather around grills and fires to enjoy warm food and cold beer while exploring the beer garden to check out two of Minnesota’s favorite past times and listen to some classic tunes spun on vinyl by DJ Brian Engle.

Amateur Snow Sculpting Contest

The Amateur Snow Sculpting Contest challenges three-member teams from throughout Minnesota to transform 4′ x 4′ x 6′ blocks of compacted snow into works of art in just eight hours using only hand tools. If you are age 18 or older, you can join the fun! There are no experience requirements, and new teams are always welcome.

This celebration features many spectacles including an ice pyramid, fire dancers, an enchanted forest, and much more. Skiers, walkers, and snowshoers can all enjoy this magical outdoor event. Plus warm up with a cup of cocoa along the way, or with a Surly beer at REI’s Luminary Party. New features include an ice forest, illuminated penguins puppets, and an ice music concert! Vulcan Snow Park is proud to partner with Special Olympics Minnesota to host the first-ever nighttime Polar Plunge event! Every Plunge makes a difference for more than 8,100 Special Olympics Minnesota athletes. Ice Sculptures and Ice Bar

The ever-sparkly ice displays are free and open to the public and are on display all 17 days of carnival in Rice Park during regular park hours. The beautiful masterpieces are created by area artists using an array of tools including knives, chainsaws, and other tools. See the artists at work (and competing for prizes and bragging rights). Warm up with some hot spiced mulled wine or another beverage to wet your whistle at the Ice Bar (hours coming soon!). The ice displays are illuminated at night and a beautiful time to be downtown Saint Paul to take in other wintry fun.

Vulcan Snow Park Giant Snow Slide

The giant snow slide is a Vulcan Snow Park crowd favorite. It puts smiles on thousands of children’s faces, allows adults to relive cherished childhood memories, and brings the community together to have fun. After all, who doesn’t have fun going down a hill on a sled?


The Giant Snow Slide will be open through Sunday, February 11.

Visitors are encouraged to come out to Vulcan Snow Park to watch sculptors at work during the first two weekends. Finished sculptures are lit after dark and remain on display for the duration of Vulcan Snow Park—or until they collapse. (Sculptures are knocked down if they’re growing dangerously unstable, or may collapse on their own, so plan to visit them early!)

This year, an incredible 70-foot tall structure will shine over Rice Park for all 17 days of Carnival activities. Ice sculptures, live music, food, an ice bar, and a variety of other programming make historic Rice Park, a lively and can’t miss destination for outdoor fun.
