Why we selected Sea of Grass as our next book club pick

Today the North American prairie is one of the most threatened ecosystems on earth […] least protected and least loved […] with little notice, these grasslands are vanishing faster than the Amazon rainforest

Sea of Grass: The Conquest, Ruin, and Redemption of Nature on the American Prairie explores the ecological and cultural signifance of North American grasslands, which are disappearing at a faster rate than the Amazon.

We’re excited to read along with you as we learn more about this “least protected and least loved” ecosystem, trace the conversion of the prairie into farmland, confront the moral and environmental costs of this transformation, and learn more about the individuals, communities, and organizations working to protect one of the most endangered ecosystems on the planet.
